What groups or classes or people receive protection under the employment discrimination laws?

Employment discrimination laws are intended to protect people who belong to certain protected categories. Those protected characteristics include national origin, race, color, sex, genetic information, religion and age. Anti-discrimination laws protect employees, or employment candidates, in all aspects of employment, from recruitment, to hiring, to firing, and anything in between, such as promotions, job trainings, or discipline.
