Can I do anything about untrue statements that my former employer made about me to a potential employer?

Your employer cannot tell lies about you to future employers. If they do that they would be obstructing with your opportunity to get a job, and that has a punishment. In some jurisdictions, including Florida, you can sue that employer for defamation.
